Is becoming a vet tech worth it?

Most folks start considering a vet tech career because they love animals. But is becoming a vet tech worth it? What does a vet tech do every day?

Is becoming a vet tech worth it?

Becoming vet tech is worth it because you feel like you are giving back to the community by helping animals. You can help with puppy and kitty shots, healing a broken leg, and giving good advice to pet parents. Most folks choose to become vet techs because they get emotional benefits from the job. They feel fulfilled at the end of the day.

What can you do as a vet tech?

Some vet techs really enjoy taking care of cats and dogs, but others love dealing with birds and reptiles. You can choose what kind of veterinary practice or clinic you want to work for based on your interests (large animal vet vs. small animal vet). You could even work in a teaching hospital or at an animal rescue nonprofit. You may need to do years of vet tech training in college before you can become certified. Vet tech salaries vary depending on experience and location.

How much will you get paid?

A vet tech salary will vary depending on whether you are an LPN vet tech, LVT vet tech, or RVT vet tech. Veterinarians need vet techs just as much as vets need doctorate degrees. And, for every veterinarian, there are usually multiple job opportunities for vet techs. Vet techs can start as low as $12 an hour, but go well up into the $50k+ salary range depending on location, practice size, and years of experience.

How does being a vet tech impact your personal life?

It can be hard to come home from a day of work at a vet clinic. You could've been watching folks say good bye to their pets, expressing anal glands all day, or dealing with pets (and people) in pain. But most vet techs are happy and find that their jobs help them appreciate the little things in life, like their own pets. The best vet techs feel like they know what to do when their pets are hurt or sick. And it's a rewarding feeling!

What does a vet tech study in college?

A vet tech studies animal behavior, general veterinary medicine, and anatomy along with a lot of lab time towards hands on experience. The vet tech program also includes clinical rotations at local vet clinics that give you hands on training. These experiences help you get certified, and help you decide whether or not vet-tech'ing is for you.

What are other vet techs like?

Vet techs are some of the kindest, funniest people in the whole world. They quickly become like family. They love to learn and grow, and vet techs feel rewarded when they save a life and make a pet parent's day. You'll never feel alone when you're around other vet techs, we promise! Plus - you'll always be the person to answer your own family's questions about their pets. There's nothing better than feeling needed.
